Humble Games

February 2020: Luisa Piccarreta's writings are a collection of teachings given to her by Jesus Christ about living in the Divine Will. Among these countless teachings is a beautiful explanation about what humbleness is and how pleasing it is to God to find someone who is humble. Reading this profound lesson—found in The Book of Heaven, Volume 3, January 12, 1900—I had the idea to make a song that would bring together the most inspiring ideas describing the nature of humbleness.

I begin the song by saying that "humbleness is what makes grace fall in love." This first sentence, although not exactly Luisa's words, summarizes the main idea in the song that God's grace, i.e. God's favor, blessings, is attracted by someone who is humble. But, by saying that "humbleness is what makes grace fall in love," I also play with words to mean that Grace, a woman, can only fall in love with Humbleness, a man. Grace can only feel attracted to Humbleness, and Humbleness—quiet and gentle, a true gentleman—can only wish that Grace notices him.

Now, what can we compare humbleness to? Humbleness is like salt that gives flavor to food, a symbol that I use here for all virtues such as patience, generosity, gentleness, etc.; without humbleness, all virtues are tasteless, i.e. void of what makes them truthful, genuine, and this can be likened to someone who is generous, patient, etc., only to be noticed by others or for some other vain reason.

"Humbleness is like a moon that guides us in the darkness of this life," shows the quality of humbleness to be a light that prevents us from getting lost in life. Problems of all kinds are a constant and humbleness seems to play a key role in helping us overcome them. Why? I think it is because humbleness keeps us united with God and, together with Him, is there a problem we cannot solve?

A final point is the song’s title. Actually, the name "Humble Games" came to my mind for no particular reason (or because it sounded like "The Hunger Games," I can’t really tell). Regardless of this, after some time thinking about this title, I thought that it was actually good for the song. Beginning with the word "humble," I think it is obvious that I chose it because the song is about humbleness.

However, when it comes to the word "games," it is not that easy to see the connection with the song. For me, the word "games" can be compared with all moments in life when we "play" to cultivate the virtue of humility. There is a saying that humbleness is the foundation of all other virtues and therefore no true generosity, patience, etc., can exist without humbleness behind them. "Humble Games" is thus an invitation to "play the game of life" together with humbleness in order to excel in all other virtues.

Febrero de 2020: Los escritos de Luisa Piccarreta son una colección de lecciones dictadas a ella por Jesús sobre el vivir en la Divina Voluntad. Dentro de las innumerables enseñanzas que encontramos en la obra hay una maravillosa explicación sobre la humildad y cuán agradable le es a Dios el hallar a una persona humilde. Leyendo esta profunda lección —a encontrarse en el Libro de Cielo, Volumen 3, enero 12 de 1900—, tuve la idea de escribir una canción que reuniría las ideas más inspiradoras que describen la naturaleza de la humildad.

Así pues, comienzo la canción diciendo que "la humildad es lo que enamora a la gracia". Esta primera oración, a pesar de no ser las palabras exactas de Luisa, resumen la idea principal de la canción sobre el hecho que la gracia de Dios, es decir, el favor, la bendición de Dios, se ve atraída hacia una persona humilde. Más aún, al decir que "la humildad es lo que enamora a la gracia", también me estoy sirviendo de un juego de palabras para decir que la Gracia —en inglés "Grace", un nombre de mujer que puede traducirse como "Gracia" o "Graciela"— solo puede enamorarse de la Humildad, un hombre. Graciela solo puede sentirse atraída por Humildad, y Humildad, tierno y silencioso, todo un verdadero caballero, solo puede esperar que Graciela se fije en él.

Ahora bien, ¿con qué podría compararse la humildad? La humildad es como sal que da sabor a las comidas, un símbolo que utilizo para representar todas las virtudes como por ejemplo la paciencia, la generosidad, la mansedumbre, etc.; sin humildad, las virtudes son insípidas, es decir, carentes de aquello que las hace verdaderas, genuinas, y esto se puede comparar con una persona que es generosa, paciente, etc., solo porque quiere ser notada por otras personas o por cualquier otra razón vanidosa y egoísta.

"La humildad es como luna que nos guía en la oscuridad de esta vida", por su parte, muestra la cualidad de la humildad de ser luz que evita que nos perdamos en la vida. Las dificultades son una constante y la humildad parece jugar un papel fundamental en ayudarnos a sobrellevar los problemas. Ahora bien, ¿a qué se debe esto? A mi parecer, la humildad nos mantiene unidos a Dios y, junto con él, ¿habrá algún problema que no podamos resolver?

Un último punto se refiere al título de la canción. De hecho el nombre "Humble Games", en español "Juegos Humildes" o "Juegos de la Humildad", me vino a la cabeza sin razón aparente (o quizás porque me recordaba a "The Hunger Games", no sé decirlo). A pesar de esto, después de pensar un poco sobre este nombre, concluí que sería apropiado para la canción. Comenzando por la palabra "humilde" en "Juegos Humildes", creo que es obvio que la escogí ya que la canción habla sobre la humildad.

Sin embargo, cuando se trata de la palabra "juegos", no es tan sencillo ver la conexión con la canción. Para mí, la palabra "juegos" se puede comparar con todos aquellos momentos en la vida en que "jugamos" a cultivar la virtud de la humildad. Hay un dicho que dice que la humildad es el fundamento de todas las otras virtudes, y por eso no puede haber una verdadera generosidad, paciencia, etc., sin la presencia de la humildad. "Humble Games", o "Juegos Humildes", es entonces una invitación a "jugar el juego de la vida" de la mano de la humildad para así poder sobresalir en todas las demás virtudes.
