Competencias de amor
About love competitions between God and man
While I was petting my cat Gordo, I pondered over the idea that all what exists has been created by God for love of us. Then, while I continued petting him, it dawned on me that the love I intend to give my cat should be, fundamentally, directed toward Jesus. This can be achieved by simply placing the intention of loving Jesus in the act of petting the cat. If I pat my cat and forget about God while doing this, I put aside the fact that the cat has been given to me by God and that He loves me through the cat at that very moment.
Love competitions consist in realizing that God, through all created things—considered here in the example of stroking a pet—, constantly loves us, and we, at the same time, ought to love Him back in what we see, touch, contemplate, etc. This way, a constant stream of love is established between God and man. The cat serves then as a “channel,” an “instrument,” a “vessel” through which circulates God’s love for man and man’s love for God, all while the cat also enjoys the love between the Creator and His creature—something that can be evidenced in the cat’s purr, meow, and other signs of well-being.
I then thought that interrupting this exchange of love could be likened to a man who is in love with a woman. The man, a symbol of God, often gives flowers to the woman, a symbol of man. The flowers symbolize the love the man feels for the woman; however, without minding the man, the woman actually falls in love with the flowers. As a result, whenever the woman receives flowers, her love is directed only toward the flowers, missing completely the point that someone has given her the flowers.
It might sound odd, but I believe that this is what happens with man, since we admire, love, contemplate God’s creation; however, it is not ingrained in us to place the intention of loving God in all what surrounds us. At best, we might do this sometimes, but I would almost assure that people are not used to think about loving God through what we experience (a charming sunset, the full moon shining in the clouds, the smell of flowers in the garden, our love for a pet, etc.).
Moreover, why call them “competitions” of love? Simply because God gives love and man tries to love Him back all the time. Also—perhaps this being the main reason—because I suspect that God, seeing man properly disposed to love Him in creation, little by little, “enlarges” man’s capacity to love God back. This way, a true “competition” of love is established, since God loves man, man loves God in return, God then enlarges man’s capacity to love and gives him more love, and man, now with more love, loves the Creator more fully—a cycle that could extend during all of man’s life and even beyond to all of eternity.

Sobre las competencias de amor entre Dios y el hombre
Mientras acariciaba a mi gato Gordo, pensaba que todo lo que existe ha sido creado por Dios por amor nuestro. Luego, mientras continuaba acariciándolo, se me ocurría que el amor que intento darle al gato debería ir ante todo dirigido a Jesús, cosa que puede hacerse con la intención de que el amor vaya dirigido a Jesús a través de la acción de acariciar al gato. Si toco al gato y me olvido de Dios mientras hago esto, dejo de lado el hecho que el gato me ha sido dado por Dios y que Él me está amando a través del gato en ese mismo instante.
Las competencias de amor consisten entonces en que Dios, a través de las cosas creadas —plasmado aquí en el ejemplo de una mascota— nos está amando, y nosotros, a su vez, debemos amarle en aquello que vemos, tocamos, contemplamos, etc. De esta forma se establece una corriente de amor constante entre Dios y el hombre. El gato sirve, pues, de “canal”, “instrumento”, “vehículo” a través del cual pasa el amor de Dios hacia el hombre y del hombre hacia Dios, y este, a su vez, goza del amor mutuo entre Creador y criatura —cosa que se evidencia en los ronroneos, maullidos y otras muestras de bienestar del animal.
Luego, se me ocurría que el romper este intercambio de amor se parece a un hombre que está enamorado de una mujer. El hombre, símbolo de Dios, le regala con frecuencia flores a la mujer, símbolo del ser humano. Las flores son la muestra de amor del hombre hacia la mujer, pero ella, sin tener en cuenta al hombre, se enamora de las flores. Y así, siempre que la mujer recibe flores, su amor queda dirigido únicamente hacia las flores, olvidando totalmente que alguien le ha regalado las flores.
Parece una locura, pero esto es precisamente lo que pienso que sucede con el hombre, pues admiramos, amamos, contemplamos la creación de Dios, pero no está como costumbre nuestra el poner la intención de amar a Dios en todo aquello que nos rodea. A lo más, esto lo hacemos a veces, pero casi aseguraría que las personas, en su mayoría, no tienen la costumbre de pensar en amar a Dios a través de lo que experimentan (un atardecer encantador, una luna llena entre las nubes, el perfume de las flores en el jardín, el amor por una mascota, etc.).
Ahora bien, ¿por qué llamarlas “competencias” de amor? Simplemente porque Dios da amor y el hombre se esfuerza por retribuirle ese amor a cada instante. Asimismo, y quizás esta es la razón principal, porque sospecho que Dios, al ver al hombre dispuesto a amarle en la creación, le va “agrandando” poco a poco la capacidad de retribuirle con más y más amor. De esta forma se establece una verdadera “competencia” de amor, pues Dios da amor, el hombre ama de vuelta, Dios agranda la capacidad de amar del hombre y le da más amor, y el hombre, con más amor, ama aún más a su Creador —un ciclo que podría expandirse por toda la vida del hombre y quizás también por toda la eternidad.
