About negative indulgences that stain our souls

Keeping an eye on my thoughts and recurrent feelings has made me aware of an internal world of negative indulgences. These indulgences, completely invisible to the outer world and contrary to my principles, are so intelligent in their way of operation that very often we are entirely oblivious of them. Moreover, they tempt us to go in directions that we would normally never take in the outer world (our daily lives).

Sadly, since these indulgences are invisible to the eyes of others and do not seem, at first sight, to have a direct effect on people or the world around us, they trick us into believing that it is all right to wallow in these negative states and their imagined scenarios.

Let's examine now these negative indulgences more in detail. So far, some that I have identified by constantly examining my thoughts include:
  1. Looking at a woman (in person, on a photo, online or anywhere else), finding her sexually attractive and indulge in imagining how it would be to touch her, undress her, make love to her and so on

  2. Even if we choose to indulge for a few seconds in these imaginings, the reality is that this is a perverse pleasure that, let alone unattended, leads us slowly to wallow in lust anywhere under any circumstance, very often without us being aware that it is not OK to indulge in this type of fornication.

Classically this was described by Jesus Christ in the Sermon on the Mount as committing adultery in the heart, something a man does with a woman. Nowadays, however, I would extend this teaching to adultery in the heart committed by a woman with a man or, if a person identifies as gay, as adultery in the heart with whomever we indulge in this kind of fantasies.

We are all susceptible to this type of indulgence no matter our sexual orientation and, perhaps even more today, with so many subliminal messages bombarding us constantly on TV, the Internet, advertisement and the media in general. This is another reason why it is so crucial today to take control of ourselves, a path that begins, in my opinion, by being aware of what we constantly think of and, even more importantly, what we do with these thoughts.

  3. Learning that someone (perhaps that we do not like much for any reason) is not doing well (e.g. financially or physically) or that something bad has happened to that person, and feeling happy about it

  4. What a sweet and perverse sense of happiness! Indulging in this even for a few seconds leaves a stain of moral deprivation. It is so vicious because it actually hides hatred under a false sense of happiness. Moreover, it even justifies why we should feel happy by making us believe that whoever is going through a hard time deserves it because he is so bad.

My last encounter with this kind of indulgence was while talking with my mother about the latest news. She mentioned that a person was not doing well. At first I did not know who it was and despite this, I began to feel happy. It felt as though by things going bad for someone this made them morally wrong and made me morally right (because things were doing well for me). A few seconds after, I learned that my mother was talking about a politician who was having serious health problems. Thankfully, while learning more about his condition, I was able to catch myself in the act of indulging in someone else's misfortune. This made me feel terribly wrong but helped me wake up from this pitiful state.

  5. Learning that someone (perhaps that we do not like much for any reason) is actually doing well (e.g. financially) or that something great has happened to that person, and feeling angry about it

  6. This is what we call envy, another perverse feeling that often, without noticing it, leads us to desire to people, at the time we learn of their achievements, accomplishments, etc., that things go bad for them. Envy is a very destructive emotion. It makes us believe that if someone is getting something good, we should also be getting the same. If for instance we learn that someone earns a lot of money in business and we have not been able to do the same in our own businesses, here we have fertile ground for us to start feeling envious.

Envy might then take us into anger (because we can easily start judging ourselves for not being able to replicate someone else's success in our lives) or lead us to other negative states (e.g. apathy, sadness, depression). The key is to recognize that we indulge in envy or any other negative emotion because, ironically, we actually get a lot of pleasure from it.
So far, these are three indulgences that I have noticed quite often in my life. Your indulgences might be different but you can most likely identify with at least one of the three at any time down the road.

Now, let's suppose that we have identified a negative indulgence. How do we then overcome it? Here are the steps:
  1. If we are truly committed to going past an indulgence, the first step is to simply admit to ourselves that we have wallowed in it at the very moment we spot it. There is no need to punish ourselves for it or fall into the trap of beating ourselves up interiorly with thoughts such as 'how can you be so cruel,' 'how can you be so such and such,' etc. We need to be honest with ourselves but we also need to be gentle with ourselves. There is no need to waste energy in destroying our self-esteems with all sorts of negative internal chatter.
  2. We must then remain awake. This means that we have to learn to be aware at all times of what we are thinking and how we react to our thoughts. This is crucial so that we do not get stuck on feeling bad because we have indulged in any negative state. Instead, we can choose to take control of ourselves and simply stop indulging in whatever it is we catch ourselves indulging in.
  3. Refresh and repeat. Of course we will be tempted over and over again. This is why we must remain awake at all times, become that internal policeman that always monitors thoughts and then, when we are about to indulge in lust, envy or any other negative state, we must take control of the indulgence and let go of it.
But, how do we let go? For me, the mechanics of letting go are somehow difficult to put into words because we are talking about emotional states, something we cannot grasp with our hands. For understanding how we do it, let's imagine that you are a policeman watching over your thoughts so that you do not wallow in any of the negative indulgences.

A robber (=a negative indulgence) then appears and tries to break into a house (=your peace of mind). The policeman obviously needs to do something about it. However, he can either do nothing, get more and more stressed as he watches the robber steal everything in the house, or take control of the situation, arrest the robber and take him out of the place. The same happens with the mind. We catch ourselves indulging (=the policeman spots the robber) and we must act immediately to let go of this state (=arrest the robber and take him out of the scene).

Know, however, that the robber is also extremely clever. He will be back in many other forms, especially when we are not paying attention to him, in order to trick us and break into the house. That is why we need to get disciplined in monitoring our thoughts at all times but also without getting paranoid about this (remember that no negative state is good for us). In the end, once more, be gentle with yourself. Like I said, the robber is very clever and that is why he will probably manage to break into the house even if it is only for a few seconds. When this happens, do not waste your precious energy on beating yourself up for letting the robber unattended (an internal chatter that only yields more negative emotions). Instead, use your energy to catch the robber once more and take him out of the scene. We are all on duty 24/7. Just keep the internal eyes open and act accordingly.
