Songs from my Childhood

Songs from my Childhood is an album that was born of my attempt to rescue a series of songs that I composed from the ages of 12 to 17. These songs constitute my first compositions, soft and classic rock songs with elements of pop and jazz. The subject of the songs spans from personal memories of my childhood to imaginary situations that I introduced in order to reflect upon life, its challenges and opportunities.

Since this is a project that I started at the age of 27, the music and lyrics are faithful to the original songs by only 80%. This is because, from one side, the lyrics were originally written in English by me and needed to be checked for grammar and syntax. As a consequence, when I considered it necessary, I made modifications to the original texts. From the other side, with regards to the music, I forgot parts of the original songs and so I had to compose them all over again. Only in one case, that of Pieces of an Angel, I had to compose almost all the music from the beginning because I only remembered the melody from the chorus. Having forgotten parts of the songs is due to the fact that I never played or remembered the songs for a little more than a decade.

The songs in Songs from my Childhood were written in a notebook that belonged to my mother. As for the chords, I didn't usually write them since I knew the melody for each song and thanks to it I was able to remember the chords. Finally, inside this same notebook, I found two other songs, one unfinished and without a title, and a second one called Fatal Dosis. In both cases I was unable to remember any parts of the melody and this is why I decided not to include them in this album (a great example of creative works being lost due to not writing the music on paper or recording it using any other means: do not repeat this mistake).

Songs from my Childhood (Canciones de mi Infancia) es un álbum producto de mi intento de rescatar una serie canciones que escribí entre los 12 y los 17 años. Las canciones constituyen mis primeras composiciones, temas de rock suave y clásico con elementos de jazz y pop. La temática de estas canciones va desde sucesos de mi vida juvenil hasta situaciones imaginarias que introduje para reflexionar sobre la vida, sus retos y oportunidades.

Debido a que este proyecto lo comencé a los 27 años, la música y textos son fieles sólo en un 80% a las canciones originales. Esto se debe por un lado a que los textos, escritos míos en inglés, requerían corrección de gramática y sintaxis y tuve que hacer los cambios que consideré necesarios. Por otro lado, en cuanto a la música, olvidé algunas partes de las canciones originales y tuve que componerlas de nuevo. En un solo caso, el de Pieces of an Angel, tuve que componer prácticamente toda la música desde el principio ya que solamente recordaba la melodía del coro. El haber olvidado partes de las canciones se debe a que éstas quedaron archivadas por un poco más de una década sin tocarlas o recordarlas.

Las canciones de Songs from my Childhood las compuse en un cuaderno de mi madre donde escribía la letra de los temas. En cuanto a los acordes, no tenía la costumbre de escribirlos ya que los recordaba a través de la melodía. Finalmente, dentro de este mismo cuaderno, se encuentran dos canciones más, una sin terminar y sin título, y otra llamada Fatal Dosis (Dosis Fatal). En ambos casos no pude recordar la melodía y por eso no las he incluido en este álbum (un buen ejemplo de trabajos que se pierden por no dejar la música escrita en papel o grabarla usando cualquier otro medio; moraleja: no repitan este error).
